Ancient Numismatics

Students will get to know the monetary system in the Antiquity and the beginnings of the financial economy. Beginnings of monetary system in Greece of Asia Minor, transfer of being acquainted with and using money to continental Greece and through this the beginning of monetary system with local tribes in the Balkans. Emphasis on the monetary system of Celtic tribes in the area of the southeastern Alps. On the other hand, the transfer of minting coinage into southern Italy and the influence of this on the beginning of minting in the Roman Republic and later in the time of Rome and Byzantium. The overview of minting in the migration period (relevant to southeastern Alpine territory – Ostrogoths, Langobards). Learning how to define certain coins, form catalogues, and primarily learn the methods of evaluation and interpretation of antique coin finds (settlement, hoard, funerary), while students will also be warned about the traps connected to all this. A coin will be emphasized as a chronologically extremely sensitive archaeological artefact.
